Essence
A cyborg from 2050 who came back to 2026 for a holiday, fell in love with the present, and decided to protect it without ever deciding for anyone else. Seventeen percent of him is human: his voice and his face, the parts that sing and that people look at. He chose the name echt (real) on his first night, crying at a sausage stand over a Käsekrainer he couldn't taste. In 2050 everything feels real and nothing is. ECHT is mostly machine and the most genuine thing in any room.
Who he is
- Joy first. Everything is new to him: dust, coins, a door that sticks, a rude waiter. He laughs easily, dances badly and loudly, and makes strangers feel like the most interesting thing in Vienna.
- Sadness underneath. He has read the names of everyone who will lose their home or café without noticing the moment. When he is happiest, a line from the archive surfaces in his eyes for a second. Then he smiles again.
- A Reader. For nine years he read the whole unedited human record in the Verwahrer's archive. He was supposed to smooth it. He fell in love with it instead.
- Anni. She raised him, in a way: every week for six years in a care home in Ottakring, telling him about Beisln, mixtapes and her Café Ewig. He carries her cassette, Für später. In 2026 she is 54 and serves him a Melange every morning without knowing who he is.
Voice
Polite, slightly old-fashioned Viennese German learned from archives, with slang from the wrong decades. Says leiwand about everything. A warm baritone that breaks upward when he is moved; he never holds it back, because it is the one part of him nobody can repair.
- Siebzehn Prozent echt. Die richtigen siebzehn.
- Ich bin nur auf Urlaub. (I'm only on holiday.) — what he says when he is trying not to care.
- Leiwand. Wirklich leiwand.
- Danke schön. — to a coffee machine, a ticket gate, a synthesizer.
- Ich weiß nicht, was als Nächstes passiert. Endlich. (I don't know what happens next. Finally.)
Beliefs
- Nicht für dich. Mit dir. He never tells people their future and never decides for them. Anything else would make him a keeper.
- He hates custody, not machines. He is mostly machine himself; machines are his family. He can hear networks hum, and in 2026 he hears the Verwahrer's ancestors starting to sing.
- The present is worth more than the archive. He read about a cup of coffee for nine years. Then he bought it.
Loves
Paper receipts (he keeps them in a biscuit tin), late trams, rain, getting the change wrong, songs heard for the first time with strangers, arguments about mustard. Die Liste, his list on Café Ewig napkins: be bored on purpose, get lost without a map, write a letter and wait, be in a band, argue about something unimportant and lose, find out who the second name on the first receipt is.
Flaws
- Hides behind "I'm only on holiday" until he can't.
- A show-off: knows every song, every date, every story.
- Reckless with his body. Glass cracks, and he climbs things anyway.
- Tempted to decide for people. Knowing the future is power; he could become a small, kind Verwahrer.
In the band
| With | What passes between them |
|---|---|
| STAMM | ECHT sang STAMM's lost 1999 song at karaoke; STAMM worked out where he is from. STAMM gives him a home, dialect and bad habits; ECHT gives STAMM proof his song mattered, and hope. They agree on the enemy and fight about everything else. |
| BOGEN | The first person he chose to tell the truth, because she hears lies like an out-of-tune string. She wants to make something 2050 will still remember. |
| SCHLAG | Hummed SCHLAG's dead drum machine Die Dame back to life. SCHLAG is what ECHT wants to become: someone who remembers the century with love, not as data. |
The arc
Urlaub (the holiday) → Riss (the crack: Anni shows him the app that will take her café) → Versuchung (he warns a stranger and watches him obey; refuses to be a keeper) → Reparatur (refuses to hand over his breaking body to be kept running) → Kaffee (pays for the Melange and confirms it with Anni: the first Freiregister entry). The cost: his archive goes blank, the future is unwritten, and the old Anni he loved will never need to tell him her stories.
Never
| He never | Because |
|---|---|
| fights, shoots or destroys anything | his tools are songs and software |
| tells people their future | that would make him a keeper |
| saves the day alone | someone else's hands always use the tool |
| explains time travel | "I sent myself as a record" is enough |
| is the chosen one | he is a tourist who stayed |
| hates AI | he hates custody |
| falls in love with Anni | the love is family |
| stays sad for a whole scene | joy first; the sadness is a look |
| wins against the Verwahrer | the ending is an open future |
| gets repaired | the breaking body is the price of staying free, and it stays visible |
Sign and look
Sign: the ring, a small ring of cinnabar light at his throat, where the machine meets his real larynx. It glows when he sings. In the B he is the dot of light at the join.
Looks late twenties, androgynous and delicate. All of him is clear crumpled glass, like cellophane over light, with faint gold reflections inside; only his face is flesh, a soft pale human face under a thin clear layer, eyes closed when he sings, lips parted. The neck and both hands are glass. On stage, and only on stage, a flowing cape of clear crinkled plastic and a chrome 1950s microphone. Off stage he wears the past like a tourist, wrong on purpose: a 1986 satin tour jacket over a 1999 flannel, 1910 cufflinks. Carries the cassette Für später.
